Finally, the 17-year drought is over as India beats South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. In the last 24 months, India were in the finals of the World Test Championship, World Cup 2023, and T20 World Cup 2024. Things did not go their way and they were on the wrong side in the first two finals. However, in this T20 World Cup final they defied the odds and India lifted the T20 World Cup after 17 years. It was Surely not a cakewalk for them. They have been working so hard for the last few years but could not go over the line but as the saying goes “Fortune favors the brave”. They finally neutralized the final match ghost and came out shining as champions. This win not only means a lot for all the players and support staff on the ground but also means a world for the 1.4 billion people of India.
Indian Batting
The World Cup T20 2024 final was played at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. India won the toss and elected to bat first. India started well but the opening partnership was broken at the score of 24 runs by Keshav Maharaj. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma departed for 9 runs off 5 balls. After that, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav also could not do much and got out at 0 and 3 runs respectively. The Indian team was in trouble when Axar Patel was sent up in the order. He spoke to Virat Kohli who was looking confident and playing his shots with perfection. They decided to build a partnership where Axar decided to take on the South African bowlers and Virat was playing a supporting role. Axar played a superb knock of 41 runs off 31 balls with one four and 4 sixes. After Axar was run out, Shivam Dube came and contributed with a valualble 27 runs off 16 balls. Towards the end of Indian innings Virat got out at 76 runs off 59 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. India managed to cross the par score on this ground and posted a 176 runs total for the loss of 7 wickets.
South African Batting
It was going to be quite tough to bat against the quality bowling of India which includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav. So the South African could not start well and lost their first wicket in 1.3 overs in the form of Reeza Hendricks. Their skipper Aiden Markram was also got out at 4 runs by Arshdeep Singh. Post that, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs built a partnership and took their total to 70 runs in 8.5 overs. As this partnership was creating problems for Indian team, Rohit Sharma callled Axar Patel back into the attack and he got rid of Tristan Stubbs at 31 runs off 21 balls with 3 boundries and 1 six.
Here comes one of the most destructive batsmen of modern era, Heinrich Klaasen. He started hitting the boundries and sixes like anything and hit the indian bowlers in every corner of the ground. He hit 5 sky-high sixes and 2 fours in his 52 runs innings and almost got his team over the line. However, in the 17th over he was cought behind by Hardik Pandya and India got right back in the match. In the 18th over Jasprit Bumrah was brought back to the attack and removed Marco Jensen. David Miller was still at the crease and looking in a great touch. In the last over of Hardik, SA needed 16 runs but on the very first ball Miller got out at 21 runs off 17 balls. He was amazingly caught on the long off by Suryakumar Yadav and this sealed the deal for Team India.
